This was a great idea by Topps to mix past baseball greats into the base set. It allows younger collectors to get cards of legendary players whom they otherwise would never be able to collect. This is my first Jackie Robinson baseball card, tastefully added to the set as number 42. Topps even provides a little history lesson in the back of the card in case you’ve never heard of Jackie Robinson:
“April 10, 1947, was perhaps the most significant day in the history of Major League Baseball. On that date, the Brooklyn Dodgers purchased the contract of Jackie Robinson, thereby taking the first step toward the desegregation of the sport. This year, MLB and Topps celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this momentous occasion.“
