Year-end Award Predictions

Written by Steve on October 29th, 2008

With the World Series coming to a conclusion later this week, I’m wondering who will receive the MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year awards.  Using some of my own statistical methods, I’ve come up with who I would vote for if I were given a vote.

American League MVP – Miguel Cabrera

He’s been playing professional baseball since he was 17.  He broke into the Majors in 2003 at the age of 20, and was an immediate Rookie of the Year and MVP candidate.  In fact, he was an MVP nominee for each of his five previous years in the Big Leagues.  This year is no exception.  Miguel Cabrera hit .292 with 127 RBI and a league-leading 37 home runs.  Also strengthening his case is the overall lack of dominant hitters in the American League this year.  The only other player I see as being a serious contender for the AL MVP is Alex Rodriguez, unless of course, it goes to a pitcher this year.

National League MVP – Albert Pujols

This guy’s one of the best hitters around these days.  This year, like pretty much every year this decade, Albert Pujols is a serious contender for MVP honors.  This year he hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBI.  While he didn’t lead in any of these categories, each of the numbers is solid.  I think the only other contender in the National League might be Ryan Howard, especially if he does something dramatic to help the Phillies win the World Series.

American League Cy Young Award – Roy Halladay

I know, Cliff Lee is more likely to win the Cy Young this year, but this post is about who I would vote for, not who I think will win the award.  It’s hard to argue against Cliff Lee’s 22-3 and 2.54 ERA (yes, I said 22-3!!!), but hear me out.  Roy Halladay is also a 20 game winner, even though it’s 20-11.  His 2.78 ERA puts him second to Cliff Lee.  He has 206 strikeouts compared to Cliff Lee’s 170.  He pitched 9 complete games compared with Lee’s 4.  And his WHIP is lower than Lee’s.  My vote goes to Halladay, even though I’m pretty sure Cliff Lee will win it.

Tim Lincecum

National League Cy Young Award – Tim Lincecum

This pick was easier than picking the AL Cy Young award, but once again there’s some good competition.  The name of that competition is Johan Santana, who has the advantage of leading his team to the post-season.  However, I believe this year’s award should go to Tim Lincecum, whose numbers came out very similar to Santana’s, except for strikeouts.  Lincecum dominated the Major Leagues in strikeouts.  265 in 227 innings.  That’s a solid 10.5 batters struck out in 9 innings, and he’s only 5’11″ and 24 years old.  My vote goes to Lincecum on sheer awesomeness.  Going 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA also helps.
