- #405 Pedro Martinez

Sweet, Pedro Martinez, my 5th most dominant player of our generation. He’s going into my Binder of Fame for his 14-4 record, 206 strikeouts, and league-leading 2.22 ERA in 2003.
“Pedro had a 48-IP streak against the Yanks with 0 HRA.”
I also just noticed that the silouhette on the bottom left corner of the cards is a silouhett of the player on the card. Nice touch. Before, I thought they were just canned icons for each position.
I also got an MLB SportsClix advertisement card. Interesting…

It looks like some sort of baseball game. There are these figurines of players standing on dials. The back has some more details:

“MLBTM SportsClixTM is an exciting game of simulated big-league play that puts you in control of your favorite team.
Get a complete starting lineup, rules, a stadium playmat, and more in every Starter Set. Build your own club by calling up players from Booster Boxes.
Collect, Play, or Trade
The action is on the dial!”
Three links are listed… www.wizkidsgames.com, www.bigleaguers.com, and www.mlb.com
The wizkidsgames.com link goes to the website of the company producing MLB SportsClix. According to the website, it looks like WizKids Games was owned by Topps, but every product the company produced were discontinued last November. In an announcement dated January 2009, it looks like Topps then sold the company and they might be back in business later this year.
As for the other links, bigleaguers.com redirects to the MLBPA website. And of course, mlb.com is the official website of Major League Baseball.
I find this interesting. I never heard of this game, and I probably would never have bought it even if I did hear about it. I guess Topps wants to focus on their new Topps Attax card game. I think that’s a wise decision, because Topps Attax looks like it has potential to be a hit.

This game was revamped in 2005 into one that was easy and fun to play.. but the support was never really there for the game.
It was sold to gamers.. not sports fans… and board gamers and collectible card gamers aren’t usually big baseball fans.
The game’s 2005 rendition was very playable .. here’s a clip of me and my boy playing .. we added a group of playmobils as fans.. hey… he’s only 7
