“The greatest player of the “dead ball era” — if not all eras — Ty was a ferocious competitor who spent 22 of his 24 seasons with the Tigers before finishing up with the Philadelphia Athletics. He used his trademark spread-hands grip to win a record 11 AL batting titles and fashion a .366 career average — still the highest of all time. “The Georgia Peach” collected more hits (4,189) than anyone but Pete Rose, and more stolen bases than all but Rickey Henderson and Lou Brock. Cobb won a Triple Crown in 1909 (.377-9-107) and received the first Chalmers Award (akin to the MVP) two years later when he swatted .420.“
