JUMBO Sunday: 2010 Topps Update Series

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

A JUMBO pack of 2010 Topps Update Series:

I noticed that the rookie cards in 2010 are starting to have more meaning than in past years, since MLB stopped letting card companies print official MLB baseball cards of minor-leaguers and teenage prospects back in 2006.  Now players need to prove themselves as Major League-worthy players before they can have an official rookie card.  That means any rookie card you see nowadays with the official “RC” logo is a rookie card of a player with a legitimate chance to succeed in the Major Leagues.  I like that.  It cuts out a lot of junk cards of sub-par athletes whom you’ll never see take the field in a big-league ballpark.

JUMBO Sunday: 2010 Topps Series 2

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Few, if any, World Series championships have featured more wall-to-wall drama than the 2001 renewal, in which three games were decided in the final at-bat.  Before Arizona’s Luis Gonzalez clinched Game 7 with a walk-off hit, New York’s Derek “Mr. November” Jeter provided a thrill of his own with a two-out, game-ending homer in the 10th inning of Game 4.

Now let’s hop into our baseball time machine.  Here we go to 2009… we see Justin Upton sliding in:

On to the 1950′s:

and on to the 1930′s:

Gonzalez has been the San Diego Padres’ All-Star slugger for the past 3 seasons, averaging a .286 AVG and 35 homers from 2008-2010.

Funny note:  The Oakland Athletics team card #410 lists the home run leader as “Jack Crust”

The silk card is pretty neat looking in person.  It even has a little window so you can feel the silk.  Now that’s what I call gimmickery!  It feels like I should put this card into my daughter’s toy box instead of into my display case (but nonetheless, it’s going into the display case for now).

Isn’t it kind of ironic that the 2010 reprint of the Babe Ruth 100th Birthday card is valued much more than the original?  Beckett lists this card at $6, while the original at only $2.  I guess it’s no big loss that Mom threw out the original:

This year’s true All-Star Rookie:

Ryan Perry is undergoing “baptism by fire”, as the back of the card puts it, for the Detroit Tigers:

Both Rookies of the Year, both hit many homers in their first 3 seasons:

And the moment everyone’s been waiting for…  My Topps Million card…
