“Big Papi” says his most supportive — and plentiful — fans are kids, and it’s easy to see why.  The Red Sox star brings a childlike joy to the game, smiling all the way to two World Series championships.

David Ortiz set up the David Ortiz Children’s Fund in 2007  to help kids in need.

2008 Topps Updates & Highlights:

  1. #UH121 Jacque Jones
  2. #UH90 Dan Haren
  3. #UH325 Clay Hensley
  4. #UH207 Alberto Gonzalez (Rookie)
  5. #UH321 Jeff Niemann (Rookie)
  6. #UH87 Ryan Langerhans
  7. #UH34 Nate McLouth (All-Star)
  8. #UH64 Joe Nathan (All-Star)
  9. #UH95 Ichiro (All-Star)
  10. Year in Review #YR162 David Ortiz

A couple of pops by Big Papi lifted the Red Sox over the Rays, 5-4, on September 12.  He drove in all of Boston’s runs with a three-run shot in the third inning and a two-run game-ender (his 10th since moving to Beantown in 2003) in the ninth.  The last was a misjudged fly that barely cleared a low wall.

After a disappointing 2009 season where he batted .238, Big Papi is off to an even more disappointing start in 2010.  He’s batting only .171 so far this season.  Did you know he also has a public website and Facebook page?

And the excellent defensive player Ryan Langerhans, who can’t seem to hit above the Mendoza line offensively.  He’s going into my Nationals binder.

So far this season, David Ortiz has struck out in half of his 22 At-Bats, hitting only .136 with no home runs yet.

And our Nat of the Day is Shawn Hill:

Shawn is a Canadian pitcher who played on the Nationals 2005-2008.  He was released before the 2009 season and played most of 2009 in the Padres minor leagues before starting 3 games for the Padres and then getting released.  He began 2010 playing for the AAA Las Vegas 51s of the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

  3. #322 Scott Kazmir/Johan Santana/Erik Bedard (League Leaders)

  10. #38 Preston Wilson

“Though they couldn’t get a win to show for it, the Red Sox made a little history in Game 4 of the ALCS when Youkilis, Ortiz and Ramirez became the second trio to hit back-to-back-to-back postseason homers.  The Yankees did it, also against Cleveland, in 1997.”

…I won’t make the obvious steroid comment here…

When the Yankees hit back-to-back-to-back postseason homers in 1997, it was Tim Raines, Derek Jeter, and Paul O’Neill.
