Last year’s National League Rookie of the Year hasn’t lived up to his promise this year, batting a meager .218 for 2009.

A cousin of Dodgers infielder Ramon Martinez, Geovany has been impressive in the Minor Leagues.  He was named an All-Star in the Florida State League in 2003, and in the Texas League (Double-A) in ’04.  The Puerto Rico native, known for his defense and game-calling, made his Major League debut as a pinch-hitter on September 23 against Houston.

Less than a year after taking over as the starting catcher for the Cubs, Soto found himself voted to the ’08 All-Star Game as the first National League rookie ever to start at the position.  His potent bat, which had produced 16 homers and 56 RBI by the intermission, made him a clear choice.  Geovany batted twice at Yankee Stadium before being replaced.

Geovany Soto followed up his 2008 All-Star/Rookie of the Year season in 2009 by batting only .218 with 11 home runs.  Must’ve been all that pot-smoking he did to celebrate his Rookie of the Year award.
