“No Rawlings Gold Glove Award for AL outfielders has escaped Ichiro since he came into the league, his 2006 honor representing his sixth straight.  Combining rare speed, flawless instincts and a compelling arm, the Mariners right fielder has not committed more than three errors in any of those seasons.  His .994 fielding percentage tops all MLB outfielders who have played in at least 500 games since ’01.”

Ichiro’s streak of Gold Gloves ended in 2011 when he had the worst season of his career.

“While Ichiro wowed the USA with his speed (56 SBs) and bat (242 hits) in 2001, he also did a fair imitation of Roberto Clemente in right field.  The Japanese sensation committed just one error in 342 chances, and showed off one of the game’s greatest rocket-launchers.  Ichiro threw out eight runners and forced numerous others to hit the brakes.  In addition to the AL MVP Award, he accepted a Gold Glove.”

Ichiro is now a 7-time Nippon Professional Baseball Golden Glove Award winner and a 10-time MLB Gold Glove Award winner.

“From Japan and Dominican Republic, respectively, Ichiro and Pujols made dramatic big-league debuts in 2001.  Ichiro won the AL bat crown (.350), Rookie of the Year Award and MVP Award.  Albert smashed .329-37-130, won the NL Rookie of the Year prize and finished fourth in NL MVP voting.  Each player ripped at least .312 in ’02 and ’03, with Pujols copping his first NL bat crown (.359) the latter year.”

After 10 seasons of play, neither Ichiro nor Pujols have ever hit under .300 in a season.

“Sixty-two seasons have passed without a .400 hitter, but there is a prevailing opinion that, if any one active player has the ability, it’s Ichiro.  ”If anybody can do it, he’s the one,” says Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella.  ”He doesn’t strike out.  He puts the ball in play… He can run like heck.”  From 2001-02, Ichiro pounded out 450 hits — the most ever by a player in his first two seasons.”
