Archives Project: 1989 Classic Travel Purple

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I think I have so few of these Classic cards because we probably kept the cards of our favorite players before selling off the game at a yard sale in between moves.  I have three cards in the purple series, including the best card in 1989 Classic:

  1. #152 Ellis Burks
  2. #174 John Smoltz
  3. #193 Ken Griffey Jr.

2001 Topps Golden Anniversary #GA14 Ken Griffey Jr.

2001 Topps Golden Anniversary #GA14 Ken Griffey Jr.

2001 Topps series 1:

  1. #403 Seattle Mariners (Division Highlights)
  2. #367 Bobby Bradley/Kurt Ainsworth/Chin-Hui Tsao (Prospects)
  3. Golden Anniversary #GA14 Ken Griffey Jr.
  4. #31 Jeffrey Hammonds
  5. #280 Royce Clayton
  6. #302 Alex Ramirez
  7. #203 Warren Morris
  8. Gold #172 Kevin Jordan (Serial#1783/2001)
  9. #163 Kevin Elster
  10. #161 Benji Gil

Few sluggers have homered at a more rapid pace than Griffey.  He holds AL records for most four-baggers through April, May and July; most consecutive games with a bomb (eight), and for being the youngest to reach both 350 and 400 bombs.  In 2000, at age 30, he cracked the top 25 for career homers.  He has been selected to 11 All-Star Game rosters.

2001 Topps Combos #TC7 Joe Morgan/Ken Griffey Jr./Barry Larkin/Johnny Bench

2001 Topps series 1:

  1. Combos #TC7 Joe Morgan/Ken Griffey Jr./Barry Larkin/Johnny Bench
  2. #382 Kirk Gibson (Golden Moments)
  3. #201 Hideo Nomo
  4. #213 Matt Lawton
  5. #100 Derek Jeter
  6. #219 Raul Ibanez
  7. #179 Michael Barrett
  8. #226 Kurt Abbott
  9. #20 Shawn Green
  10. #109 Jay Bell

In terms of all-around ability, these superstars are the four greatest Reds of all time.  Each won not only a league MVP Award, but multiple Gold Gloves and Silver Slugger Awards.  Their greatest seasons: Griffey — .304-56-147 in ’97 as a Mariner, Larkin — .298-33-89, 117 runs, 36 steals in ’96, Bench — .293-45-148 in ’70 and Morgan — .320-27-111, 58 steals in ’76.  In each of those seasons, each player won a Gold Glove.  Barry and Junior should one day join Johnny and Joe in the Hall of Fame.

They seem to have forgotten to add Pete Rose to the card.

BB and Junior have been hanging out in MLB clubhouses since the 1970s.  After all, their fathers, Bobby and Ken Sr., were both All-Star outfielders.  In the 1990s, the superstar sons reigned as the two most complete outfielders in all of baseball.  Barry won three MVP Awards while averaging 36 homers and 34 steals.  Griffey won every Gold Glove of the decade and went yard 381 times.  Interestingly, on the career list of father/son home runs, the Bonds and Griffey families rank one-two, respectively.

Ken Griffey Jr. is back with the Seattle Mariners this season, and I have a feeling it might be his final season before retiring.  Barry Bonds is still considered damaged goods, and he probably wishes he could sign on with the Pirates for just one more season, but that would be wishful thinking.
