I award the Best Card in the Pack Award to the Eddie Murray reprint…

20 YEARS EARLIER:  How would the Eddie Murray of 1984 have stacked up in 1964?  This was one of his greatest all-around seasons, as he won both an AL Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Award, while going .306-29-110 and leading the American League with a .410 on-base percentage.  In ’64, no player in either circuit reached all of those four statistical levels.

Hanley comes in a close second:

6 seasons into his Major League career, Jeff Mathis is still struggling to hit .200:

Cards Your Mom Threw Out seems kind of pointless for cards printed after 2000:

Ryan Braun almost out-ran the giant who was chasing him, until he twisted his ankle and fell:

The silk card is pretty neat looking in person.  It even has a little window so you can feel the silk.  Now that’s what I call gimmickery!  It feels like I should put this card into my daughter’s toy box instead of into my display case (but nonetheless, it’s going into the display case for now).

Isn’t it kind of ironic that the 2010 reprint of the Babe Ruth 100th Birthday card is valued much more than the original?  Beckett lists this card at $6, while the original at only $2.  I guess it’s no big loss that Mom threw out the original:

This year’s true All-Star Rookie:

Ryan Perry is undergoing “baptism by fire”, as the back of the card puts it, for the Detroit Tigers:

Both Rookies of the Year, both hit many homers in their first 3 seasons:

And the moment everyone’s been waiting for…  My Topps Million card…

Pack Break: 2010 Topps Series 1

2010 Topps Series 1:

  1. #82 Jason Marquis
  2. #149 Jose Guillen
  3. #280 Mark DeRosa
  4. #321 Pat Burrell
  5. #32 Cincinnati Reds (Team Card)
  6. The Cards Your Mom Threw Out #126 Jim Palmer
  7. Legendary Lineage #LL21 Hank Greenberg/Ryan Braun
  8. Topps Town #TTT5 Evan Longoria
  9. #24 John Maine
  10. #69 Kansas City Royals (Team Card)

Although their careers are separate by 60 years, Greenberg and Braun each have garnered notoriety for his prolific power and share a common Jewish background.  Hank, who slugged 331 homers in a dozen seasons for Detroit and Pittsburgh, was the first Jewish inductee in the Hall of Fame.  Ryan, whose father is Jewish, has piled up 103 longballs in just three campaigns.

If Braun is anything like Greenberg, then the best is yet to come.  Hank Greenberg hit 58 home runs at the age of 27.  Ryan Braun is 26 this season.

“When Ryan learned he’d be moving from third base to left field in 2008, he tracked down 100 fly balls per day to get ready.  Practice literally made perfrect; he didn’t make a single error in 149 games.”

He made a couple of errors in 2009, but that’s much better than the 26 errors he made playing at third base in 2007.
