Mr. Padre saved the big night for his madre.  On August 5, 1999, in St. Louis, Gwynn failed to crack his 3,000th hit in a game in which Mark McGwire blasted his 500th homer.  But the next day in Montreal, on his mother Vendella’s birthday, he reached the milestone — and was promptly embraced by her.  Incredibly, his 2,000th safety also fell on her birthday!  Tony became the 22nd man to reach 3,000, and only Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie got there in fewer games than his 2,284.  He finished the night with 4 hits.

Gwynn’s career batting average of .338 is the highest of any player who bagan his career after World War II.
