Topps 2005
2005 was the height of the madness and ridiculousness surrounding the baseball card hobby, before Major League Baseball laid the smack down. The latest Beckett Baseball has 50 pages dedicated to 2005 baseball cards! Compare that with 14 pages dedicated to 2006 cards.
After 2005, only Topps and Upper Deck remained licensed to produce official Major League Baseball cards. Fleer had gone bankrupt and was bought out by Upper Deck. Donruss was shut out from licensing for baseball cards. And Major League Baseball instituted new rules for when official rookie cards could be produced and required labeling so that collectors can easily identify them.
For 2005 Topps baseball cards, there are 36 packs per hobby box. Each pack contains 10 cards. Packs with a relic card contain 8 cards.
The series 1 promotion is, “Look for 1-of-1 World Treasures Cut Signature Cards! Randomly Inserted (No Purchase Necessary. See Pack for Details.)”. Now this is a pretty exciting promotion. It means for each pack you open, you have a chance… an astronomically tiny chance, but nonetheless a chance… to find an authenticated autograph from some important figure in world history. Now that’s pretty cool.
The series 2 promotion is, “Barry Bonds base cards, exclusive autographs, relics & commemorative cards”, and “Look for 1-of-1 Power Brokers cut signature cards! Randomly inserted”.

I think in the last 25 years, this is by far my favourite Topps design – the surname on top, team name at the bottom, smooth surfaces, and simply nice to look at. Compare it to 2007’s issue, and it’s a much higher quality print…

I have liked your tribute to Topps baseball cards. I am glad to see someone who appreciates baseball cards. 2005 was a good year though. Great post by the way, very informative.

I am trying to finish the Relic set for the Red Sox and need only the Manny Ramirez Bat card – MR.
If anyone has one they could trade, sell, etc., please let me know.
Keep up the good stuff Topps!
